How to tell if a canary is male or female

The easiest way for an inexpert to determine if a canary is male or female is the following:

• Take the canary on your hand properly.

• Place it in the palm of your hand upwards with the canary’s belly in sight.

• With the other hand take the tail of the canary and push it back softly to uncover the genital area, named cloaca.

• Blow gently over the cloaca.

• If it is male you will observe a small pointed promontory or bulging.

• If it is a female you will observe a small rounded promontory in which you will see a line that constantly opens and closes.
