The following is a list of birds whose names begin with letter W together with a brief description of them. The birds do not necessarily belong to the same group and are not even similar.

Wagtails

The wagtails are passerine birds that are found in the genus Motacilia. Their name comes from the fact that they have long tails that they wag frequently. The name of their genus, Motacilia, which is also the root of their family, is translated directly as moving tail.

Warblers

These perching birds do not necessarily resemble one another but have certain similarities in common which include being fairly small, insectivorous and also fairly vocal. These birds have dull colors that make seeing them less common than hearing them. For instance, most of them are dull green or brownish and are particularly difficult to notice apart from their song.

Water thrush

This bird breeds in eastern part of the North America and its breeding grounds range from Southernmost Canada to the eastern part of the US but not in Florida. It migrates a lot and is known to winter in the Central America and also West Indies.

Wattlebirds

It is the most populous of the curlews and is known to breed most commonly in Europe, North America, Scotland and Asia.

Whinchat

This is a small European perching bird and is scientifically called Sexicola rubetra. It was also previously thought to belong to the thrush family of Turdidae, but is currently placed in Muscicapidae family. The bird is always called chat and very much resemble the thrush-like Muscicapidae family.

Whippoorwill

This is a nightjar that is moderately sized with a scientific name of Caprimugus vociferus and is mostly found in North and Central America. The name of this bird is because of the call that it makes.

White Dove

This bird is also known as Java Dove or scared Dove, and is mostly taken to belong to a separate species. Care should be taken not to release the bird because it does not have a homing instinct unlike other homing pigeons, which can very easily be confused with it.

Wild turkey

This bird is native to North America and is scientifically called Meleagris gallopavo.

Willow Tit

This is a perching bird that belongs to the tit family of birds called Paridae. Its scientific name is Poecile montanus.

Woodcocks

These are wading birds and belong to a group of seven birds that are very similar. They belong in the genus Scolopax

Wood duck

This is a type of duck that is medium in size and is a passerine duck that is also called Carolina duck. Woodpeckers They form a family of Picidae together with piculets and wrynecks.
