The Apteryx Owenii is a bird that belongs to the order, Apterygiormes and the family is Apterygidae. The bird has between 35 and 45 cm of length and holds a weight relative to the sex of the bird. The male weighs between 9 and 13 kg, while the female has a weight approximately 1–1.9 kg. This shows how strong the male is when comparing to the female. This factor has great effect on the reproduction process, which is why it becomes quite successful. The little spotted kiwi feathers actually are gray in color but pale mottled. They also have a shaggy look and mottling that is fine white. Generally, the birds lack after shafts or barbules in their body structure. In overall structure, their feathers can be said to be large vibrissae in nature especially around the gape. However, the birds in this category do not have a tail. What they have is a small pygostyle. Their respective bill is actually ivory and usually very long and the bird’s legs are pale in color. The bird has a unique range as well as the habitat. Formerly, the bird was held at the Kapiti Island. After the release, they apparently moved to Red Mercury Island, Tiritiri Matangi Island, Hen Island, and Long Island actually in the Queen Charlotte Sound. This was in the year 2000, when the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary released 20 Little Spotted Kiwis in total. It created a chance for the Little Spotted Kiwis to expand their reach and niche making great resource out of the new habitats. The Apteryx Owenii has a unique behavior. They normally eat grubs as well as other small insects. This includes the burrow far that is into the ground. The same birds also feed on distinctive types of fruit. With such a diverse dietary reach, the birds can survive in many niches around the globe that is why their population is extending to most of the world climates. The bird uses its sharp talons as well as the long beak in the digging process. The long beak is relative because it helps in reaching deep down the soft ground to reach for the available food. The birds are however disadvantaged in a way. They have fewer abilities to seek for food. With the inability to fly and get the flying insects for food, they have to depend on the food on the ground. They also cannot get food that is on the trees because they are out of their reach. The birds also have poor eyesight and cannot spot some insects that are small. The only thing to their advantage is that they have strong sense of smell that can detect any food around including those small insects. They also have that long beak meaning that they can reach for food with much ease. This is a rare bird because they do not breed easily. They have seasons for breeding and when altered the breeding process makes it difficult to increase their population. The current global warming has had a great effect on the little spotted kiwi through alterations of their respective breeding seasons.
