Apteryx Mantelli - North Island Brown Kiwi

Apteryx Mantelli - North Island Brown Kiwi

The North Island Brown Kiwi, also known by scientists as an honorary mammal, is a nocturnal flightless bird species. This is un-birdlike species of a kind. It has an appearance that is unique. This is not comparable to other bird species. Its behavior too is much different and has some divergent attributes.

The North Island Brown Kiwi species is a bird with a difference. It has thick fur that covers the entire body wholesomely giving it a shaggy hair like look that is grey-brown in color due to the colors of the respective feathers. The bird has some useless vestigial wings measuring 4-5 cm long. Because they are not in use regularly, they are hidden completely right under the plumage. This bird species has no external tails since it does not require any because it does not fly.

The North Island Brown Kiwi species has a wide spacing of their respective robust sharp-clawed kind of legs that give them a kind of an amusing rolling actual gait. Scientists believe that Kiwis are actually stout birds. They stand 50 cm tall especially the females weighing 2,060-3,850 grams. This is approximated to be 30 percent more as compared to the weight of males that is roughly 1,440-3,060 grams.

The only disadvantage with these birds is that they have poor eyesight. This is in the first place why they cannot fly properly because a flying bird needs excellent eyesight. They are further disadvantaged because they do not have a perfect sense of smell. This means that these birds are not the excellent type and they have a hard time in their survival. Scientists estimate that the North Island Brown Kiwi bird can only see a range of two to three feet ahead. The condition is even worse during the day when there is excess light from the sunrays. During the night, they can at least see past six feet, which is why they like operating at night than during the day.

The North Island Brown Kiwi bird has a long bill that is pale, grey brown and at least 20 cm. This is a unique bill actually in the world of birds. The uniqueness extends to the locations of nostrils where they are located just at the tip of the bill. In their hunt for the prey, they use the sense of smell rather than eyesight because it is better and successful this way. They have a few feathers near the base of the bird’s bill that have a great modification forming long tactile bristles. The respective rectal bristles are important in helping the bird to feel its entire way around especially in the dark places. It is good and compensates for eyesight. This is because it is relatively poor.

However, the bird is not completely disadvantaged because even with difficulties in eyesight and smell, it has very big ears. They are highly sensitive and help in the hunt for the prey guarding the movement and maintaining balance all through.
