Anseriformes

Anseriformes

Anseriformes are birds comprising of three major families. These include Anhimidae which are the screamers, Anatidae including swans, geese, and ducks and lastly the Anseranatidae or usually known as magpie goose. This group has 48 genera as well as over 161 species. It therefore can be said to be a one big family of birds that are known to survive in the harshest conditions. They are also mostly known to breed on high seasons after the other giving them an advantage with big families.

Anseriformes are birds distributed almost everywhere in the world. However, the Antarctic region does not comprise of these birds because of several reasons. This category of birds is very restricted mostly in South America. The magpie geese in the same family are found actually in Australia as well as New Guinea. This group of birds has a residence mostly in the aquatic environments. These respective niches include streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps and marshes. This is where they breed comfortably and gather their food with less strain. There are some around the marine environments but these are not many. In addition, they only leave their niche mostly when it is not near the breeding season.

Anseriformes incubation usually lasts 22-47 days. This is good time to bring up young ones and develop them adequately. The hatching process is usually speedy where they hatch down with the eyes open. The young usually are capable of foraging themselves after the hatching process. This process of fledging usually takes about 5-10 weeks before it completes. The respective age of the same bird’s first reproduction entirely varies with the respective species. Some species have an earlier reproduction bearing in mind that it is their biological status, while others take a little bit long. Usually the range takes at least five years maximum for the reproduction to take place.

The birds also have a great shape that allows them greatness in survival. Anseriformes bird’s size is medium when compared to the other types of birds. They have a 30-180 cm body size, a weight of approximately 230 g to 22.5 kg. Their respective plumage varies. It is either gray or brown while others have a black and white plumage.

The Anseriformes are a unique type of bird. They are diverse from others because they exhibit a weird character; they tend to develop an association with other bird species especially when they are breeding. This is unlike other birds that tend to separate themselves from other bird types during the entire breeding period. They are generally a bird family of a kind.

Anseriformes birds form part of the herbivorous animals. They feed on leaves, roots, seeds, stems, and flowers of aquatic vegetation. During the breeding season, they have diversified roles for each sex of the birds. The males take full responsibility during this time by taking care of feeding of the mother and the young ones. These birds have a weird character close to the humans and not like the other bird types.
