DESCRIPTION 9 inches (23cm). Brown head, beak area and sides efface, with whitish ear coverts. Neck and throat bright blue, turning green on breast, with black and white half-circle shapes down to reddish-brown belly. Tail brownish, wings bluer and green. Eyes orangish-brown, beak and legs black. Female has bolder head and beak.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION Coastal portions of Venezuela and Brazil; introduced into Rio de Janeiro.
HABITAT High tropical and subtropical trees, in small group up to 25.
DIET Insects, larvae, termites, fruits, seeds.
SPECIAL NEEDS Immatures need supplements of soaked stale white bread, cooked corn, sunflower seeds, boiled potatoes, hemp, oats, carrot strips, fresh twigs and leaf buds.
CAGE LIFE One of the most popular smaller conures, pleasant and easy to tame. Closed nest box, preferably of beech, 10 X 10 X 14 inches (25 X 25 X 35cm), entrance 3 inches (8cm). Lays 5 to 9 eggs, incubation 22 days by female days and male nights, male feeds partner during day, fledging 35 to 38 days.
