DESCRIPTION
33 1/2 inches (85cm). Body deep red, shoulders and wings yellow. Primaries
and tail coverts blue, greater wing coverts and shoulder coverts yellow,
undersides of wings red-brown. Lower back and rump light blue. Cheek region
bare and white with red feather lines. Eyes yellow, upper mandible pale
with black at base, lower mandible and legs charcoal. Female smaller with
shorter, broader beak.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION
The Scarlet Macaw is found in Southern Mexico, Central America and northern
South America. More widely distributed than any other macaw species.
HABITAT
Scarlet Macaw likes light woodland and savannah, low-lying humid areas
up to 1,300 feet (400m), in pairs, family parties or flocks up to about
25 birds. They can often be observed flying in pairs, their wings nearly
touching. Fly up to 18V2 miles (30km) to feed on palm fruit, figs, mangoes
and beetle larvae. Noisy in flight but feed in silence.
DIET
Oranges, bananas, sunflower seeds, nuts, berries, carrots, calcium (cuttlefish
bone), bread, tomatoes, fresh twigs, fresh corn on the cob.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Scarlet Macaw needs fresh branches for occupation.
CAGE LIFE
Sociable bird, usually monogamous in pairs, affectionate towards keeper.
Can be noisy, especially when frustrated or bored, screeches. Loves to
bathe, slaps water onto itself with its wings. Roomy aviary, parrot stands.
Large nest box 231/2 X 23 V2 X 25 Vi inches (60
X 60 X 65cm) all year, also for roosting. Lays 2 to 4 eggs, incubation
26 days, only by female, male sits at her side, fledging 90 days, chicks
remain with parents for some time after.
