DESCRIPTION 9 to 10 inches (23 to 26cm). Body green, chin and breast grey-green, darker at ends. Brownish band on forehead and patches on ears, lower back and centre underneath. Wing coverts bluish. Tail copper at base and end. Beak blackish, eyes orangish-red, legs dark grey. White eye ring. No visible sex distinction. Immatures duller with shorter tails.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION South America: Brazil to Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina.
HABITAT Forests, farmland, orchards, corn fields, sometimes in large flocks seeking bloom-ing trees and fields with ripening wheat. Breeds in tree hollows.
DIET Parrot mix, small pine nuts, cereal seeds, greenstuff, millet, fresh corncobs, fruit, insects and larvae.
SPECIAL NEEDS Breeding results best if pair housed on its own in quiet, protected aviary. Can be restless, best to attach natural branches to mesh of aviary to avoid injury.
CAGE LIFE Relatively quiet compared to other conures. Easy to tame, lively and inquisitive. Nest box 10 X 10 X 14 inches (25 x 25 X 35cm), entrance 3 inches (8cm). Lays 4 to 6 eggs, incubation 24 to 28 days only by female, fledging 45 to 50 days, taken care of by male.
