DESCRIPTION
12 inches (30cm). Green with blackish cap, upper throat, and below eyes.
Blue on throat and upper breast, bluish-black wings. Olive tail with bluish-black
point, underneath dark green to black. Thighs red set off by black legs.
Eyes reddish-brown, beak charcoal.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION
North Argentina, Paraguay, south-east Bolivia, southern Mato Grosso.
HABITAT
Savannahs, woods, palm country, rice fields. May be in large flocks. Nests
in tree hollows.
DIET Grain, seeds, fruit.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Much too loud to keep indoors. Hang nest box low enough so it can watch
its world and make commentary.
CAGE LIFE
Can be kept together with finches. Likes to bathe or hop in rain shower.
Tamable, easy breeder, good talker of limited vocabulary, but has a raucous
call. Will take treats out of keeper's hand. Nest box 12 X 12 X 14 inches
(30 X 30 X 40cm), entrance diameter 3 inches (8cm). Lays 2 to 5 white
eggs, incubation 25 days (when female is incubating, male sits silently
on top of box), fledging 50 to 55 days.
