DESCRIPTION 25 1/2 inches (65cm). Olive with red forehead, blue uppertail coverts and rump, bluish-red primary feathers. Cheek patches with rows of violet-brown feathers. Eyes yellow, beak charcoal, legs light grey. Female smaller. Immatures duller with brownish tint.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION The Military Macaw is found from Mexico to Argentina, in three subspecies.

HABITAT Dry forest and open woodland, in pairs or small flocks up to about 20. Like other macaws, they leave in morning to forage and return to roosting spots at dusk.
DIET Nuts, berries, fruits, greens.
SPECIAL NEEDS Barrels or drums for pairs.

CAGE LIFE The Military Macaw is easily tamed, friendly bird, moderate talking ability. Lays 2 to 3 eggs, incubation 28 days, fledging after 3 months.
