DESCRIPTION
13 inches (33cm). Green with black edges on feathers. Red cap covers down
to the eyes and nearly to the nape, hint of lavender eyebrow. Blue crown,
red wing coverts, yellow tip on tail. Yellow eyes, pale beak, grey legs.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION
Northern Mexico.
HABITAT
Forests and in lowlands, near water. Forages in cypress and acacia trees,
in pairs or large flocks.
DIET Large
sunflower seeds, boiled corn, hemp, oats, wheat, white seed, millet, walnuts,
hazel-nuts, ground nuts, fruit, greens and berries such as black currants,
rowan berries, bilberries, gooseberries and strawberries.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Fruits and berries essential in diet, as is wood for chewing.
CAGE LIFE
Gentle and popular, good talker. Courtship accompanied by shrieking and
pecking at each other. Aviary with roomy barrel or nest box. Lays 2 to
3 eggs, incubation 26 days, fledging 68 days.
