DESCRIPTION 52 to 68 inches (132 to 173cm), with tail 34 to 46 inches (86 to 117cm). Blue-green mantle and scapulars, yellow back and orange rump. Central tail feathers white barred in black, wings shiny blue, neck ruff white with dark blue margins. Head dark green with red crest. Underparts white to black undertail coverts; legs and bill bluish grey, eyes yellow, face white. Female 26 to 27 inches (66 to 68.5cm), with tail 12 to 15 inches (30 to 38cm), like Golden Pheasant but more rufous and striking black, tail feathers rounded and eyes brown to yellow. HABITAT
Lady Amherst's Pheasant likes thickets, especially bamboo, in rocky mountains,
and in woods and scrub. Flocks of 20 to 30 through winter. Flies more
readily than Golden Pheasant.
DIET
Bamboo shoots and small animals, including spiders, earwigs and beetles.
Seen feeding in shallow flowing water, turning over stones for aquatic
animals.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Shelter as well as outside habitat.
CAGE LIFE
Most elusive of true pheasants, rarely emerges from thickets of habitat.
Wild population breeds in dense woodland with thick undergrowth. Lays
6 to 8 buff cream eggs, incubation 23 days by female, who hardly ever
leaves nest.
