DESCRIPTION
21 to 223/4 inches (53 to 58cm). Distinguished by bony casque
(the helmet) atop its head covered with a sheath of keratin and very well-developed
blue and/or red wattles.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION
Eastern Chad to Ethiopia, east to Rift Valley, south to borders of northern
Zaire, northern Kenya and Uganda. Has been domesticated around the world
as food species.
HABITAT
Open grassland. Outside breeding season, may forage in flocks of several
hundred, and have been known to gather in numbers around 2,000. During
breeding, split up into monogamous pairs.
DIET Bulbs,
tubers, berries, insects and snails.
SPECIAL NEEDS Shelter as well as outside habitat. CAGE LIFE
Lays 6 to 19 eggs in scrape on the ground, incubation by female.
