DESCRIPTION Green Rumped Parrotlet is 5 inches (12.5cm). Greenish-grey upperparts, yellow rump and underneath. Yellow eyebrow, throat and chin. Females duller, and young females have necklace of 5 to 7 small black spots across throat. Eyes and legs dark brown, beak pale.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION Africa, south of the Sahara.
HABITAT Green Rumped Parrotlet lives in Gardens, parks, woodland.
DIET Canary and live food.
SPECIAL NEEDS Will breed more readily in large cage or indoor aviary where a reasonably warm temperature can be maintained.
CAGE LIFE Long-lived, hardy, bright. Can be kept in large, well-planted aviary. Male has hearty song during breeding season and can be aggressive towards small finches and waxbills. Pairs only for breeding season, and afterward separates. Mating behaviour, lasting about a week, is rough and can result in loss of many of female's feathers. They build open-type nest box or free cup-shaped nest. Lays 3 to 4 pale-blue eggs, incubation 13 to 14 days, only by female, fledging 18 days. Male feeds female on nest.
