DESCRIPTION 80 inches (203cm). Distinguishing feature is tremendous tail, from plumage showing complicated pattern of chestnut, brown, white, black and grey spots, ocelli and bars. Female up to 30 inches (76cm).
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION Indo-China, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, Thailand.
HABITAT Lowland and hill forest.
DIET Fallen fruits, ants, slugs and snails; meat, insects and fruit especially during breeding.

SPECIAL NEEDS Cannot stand frost, must be well sheltered.
CAGE LIFE Male clears display site in forest away from his rivals, attracts female with calls and dances before her. At the climax, he fans his wing feathers. If female is impressed, she consents to mating. Female lays 2 eggs and rears chicks alone, while male courts other females. Both sexes solitary.
