DESCRIPTION
8 inches (20cm). Dark green body, underside and tail bright grass-green,
accented by black eye band circling through cheeks and neck to breast
under blue throat, yellow crown, blue wing curve and brownish flight feathers.
Eyes brown, beak black, legs steel blue. Female duller.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION
Himalayan region in India and Indo-China; Burma and Sumatra.
HABITAT
Forest, scrub.
DIET Fruit,
nectar, insectile mixture, live food.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Moults in autumn and dislikes cold, damp weather and fluctuating temperatures;
move inside about 64°F (18°C) before winter weather develops.
Always introduce pair to quarters together.
CAGE LIFE
Cage or aviary bird, sings beautifully, enjoys bathing. Drinks a lot and
makes mess at feeding dishes by inspecting contents piece by piece. Quick-tempered,
and can be aggressive towards other birds. Cage31V2 X 20 X 24 inches (80
X 50 X 60cm). Spends most of time in trees and bushes, flies very little.
Cup-shaped nest of moss, hair, stalks, leaves, long grass, hay, spider
webs, coconut and hemp fibres; lined with small roots and moss; placed
in fork of branch. Lays 2 to 3 reddish-white eggs with spots, circles
and small stripes. Incubation 14 to 16 days, fledging 17 to 18 days.
