DESCRIPTION 13 inches (33cm). Male is bright green - lime on head and underside, forest on back, shoulders and tail - with bright red wing coverts. Female has duller coloration throughout and only a small, indistinct patch of red on the wings. Eyes black encircled with red.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION Northeast Australia and New Guinea.

HABITAT Open forest areas.

DIET Seeds, greens.

SPECIAL NEEDS Adults are not good community birds. Male tends to harass female during breeding season, unless male primaries are clipped.
CAGE LIFE Nests in tree hollows (particularly eucalyptus) that are up to 30 feet (9m) deep. Lays 3 to 6 eggs, incubation time 21 days, feeding by both parents, fledging 40 days.
