DESCRIPTION 43A inches (12cm). Green, plus blue in wings, on rump and on narrow band along back of neck. Eyes brown, beak greyish, legs pinkish. Female less clearly defined, lacks blue in wings.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION Tropical areas of western South America.
HABITAT Woody areas, but not thick rain forests, in colonies. Breeds in hollow trees, branches or ground holes.
DIET Fruit.
SPECIAL NEEDS Newly imported birds must be kept at room temperature. Pairs must be alone to breed.
CAGE LIFE Ideal cage bird. Can be kept with several pairs together if no breeding expected. Breeding pairs attack each other's legs, especially during breeding season. Give pair normal budgerigar nest box with peat moss or wood shavings on the bottom. Lays 4 to 6 eggs, incubation 17 to 21 days by female, fledging 30 to 34 days. May breed two or three times a year, beginning in April.
