DESCRIPTION
\2>l/2 to 16 inches (35 to 41cm). Green body with
bluish forehead and yellow throat, cheeks and crown. Wing coverts red
and wing bend red or yellow. Eyes orange, beak black, legs grey. Immatures
duller with black eyes. No visible distinction between sexes.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION
Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, in two subspecies.
HABITAT
Tropical woods, bush country. Broods in tree hollows, in large flocks
after brooding. Nomadic.
DIET Fruits,
berries, greens, fresh corncobs,
germinated sunflower seeds, half-ripe
wheat, grain mix for parrots.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Fruits and berries essential in diet, as is wood for chewing.
CAGE LIFE
Excellent talking and mimic ability. Attractive and responsive to training.
May be aggressive towards keeper during breeding season. Aviary with climbing
branches, heatable covered area. Spray during warm weather. Use a hollow
log or nest box 24 X 12 X 12 inches (60 X 30 X 30cm), entrance 6 inches
(15cm), with a layer of peat mould. Lays 2 to 5 white eggs, incubation
27 to 29 days, fledging 9 weeks.
