DESCRIPTION
4 inches (10cm). Mostly grey, darker above, with a prominent black cap,
as well as black primaries and tail feathers, and red on rump and uppertail
coverts.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION South
Africa.
HABITAT
Black Capped Waxbill are found in Forested areas. Usually in groups, sometimes
quite large. Builds nests in tree branches.
DIET
Seeds (particularly softer grass-type seeds), small insects.
SPECIAL
NEEDS Outdoor, planted aviary,
where the birds can catch their own live food, will enhance their lives
and promote breeding. Must be kept warm at all times.
CAGE LIFE
The Black Capped Waxbill can be quite tame, although always exhibits a
lively, restless personality. Nest baskets are preferred over nest boxes.
Lays 3 to 5 eggs, incubation time 12 days by both parents, fledging 28
days.
